Duncan McEwan has been photographing the Scottish landscape for more than 30 years and remains as enthusiastic as ever about the opportunities it offers, to the extent that he has no burning desire to photograph anywhere else. Interests, apart from landscape, include natural history and sport as well as most other aspects of outdoor photography – always in Scotland. He is particularly interested in botanical subjects but also finds a fascination with invertebrates and other smaller forms of wildlife rather than birds and mammals. He sees much of natural history photography as an extension of landscape work and believes that the landscape photographer who does not carry a macro lens is missing a great many opportunities.

His favourite area is Lochaber, closely followed by locations in the West and North-west Highlands, as well as the Inner and Outer Hebrides. He is, however, equally happy photographing in Lowland Scotland where he sees the photographic challenges as being much greater. The search for new locations, or new angles on familiar ones, provides continued motivation. Capturing strong compositions and interesting lighting are his constant aims.
