LECTURES
Duncan can offer the following lectures, covering a wide range of topics and illustrated with projected 35mm transparencies. Most lectures are aimed at photographic societies/clubs but some are suitable, or can be adapted, for other organisations. Each is designed to last around 90 minutes, with a break, half to two thirds of the way through. A continuous presentation is equally possible with only the commentary being slightly curtailed. I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD..... photograph abroad! A lifetime tradition of never having photographed abroad was ended in August 2005 and this lecture presents images taken since then in South Africa, Namibia, Australia and New Zealand. It covers landscape, nature, people and miscellaneous subject matter. SCOTLAND: LAND OF LANDSCAPES - what Scotland has to offer the landscape photographer, from the Lowlands to the Highlands, - light, mood, weather, seasons, mountains, lochs, moorland, coast and castles – the elements for good landscapes and where to find them. SCOTLAND: AROUND THE EDGES - an exploration of the Scottish coastline and a portrayal of the images that can be created using sea, rocks, shore, sand, dunes, erosion, maritime history, weather and dramatic light - landscapes/seascapes as well as patterns, details and natural history of the coast. SCOTLAND: LAND OF LIGHT – an illustration of the power of light in landscape photography. Scotland can claim some of the finest quality light to be found anywhere in the world and this talk illustrates the way in which light, in all its forms, can inject mood and drama into a landscape. LANDSCAPE COMMANDMENTS – the 10 most important principles for successful landscape photography. This talk contains many comparison images and sequences to illustrate how improvements can be made through the application of good technique. SPECIAL BREW 1 - a look at how to make effective use of colour, light and composition across a wide range of subject matter, including landscape, natural history, sport and people. SPECIAL BREW 2 - same as Special Brew 1, but illustrated with more recent material. OUT & ABOUT - a presentation describing Duncan’s personal approach to outdoor photography - looking for subjects and how to photograph them. It covers the same diverse range of subject matter as the Special Brew lectures. CITY LIGHTS - photography in towns and cities covering architecture, streets, industrial areas and parks, to the people, activities and events that occur there. The importance of light and composition are stressed throughout the talk. SPORTSNIGHT - photo opportunities for the amateur sports photographer, mainly of minority sports and covering both the photojournalistic approach as well as demonstrating the creative possibilities of slow shutter speeds, panning and zooming. NATURE’S WAY - close-up photography with a natural history narrative, describing how diverse life forms overcome the basic problems of survival, such as feeding, protection and reproduction. Techniques can be covered in a question session at the end. MY WAY WITH NATURE - an illustrated guide to the techniques involved in natural history photography, mostly of a close-up nature (even beyond life-size). Aspects covered include finding interesting subjects, capturing action, life cycles, composition, “gardening” as well as the use of natural and artificial light sources.
